The Clan of the Haruspex

The Haruspex is a kind of shaman who reads portents and tells the future, as well as furnishing various amulets and potions to women who seek magical protection or intercession. One particularly popular object is a colored string, which receives its magical powers from the sequence of knots tied into it by the Haruspex.

The Wagon People are fascinated with the future and its signs. An army of a thousand wagons once turned aside because a swarm of rennels (poisonous crab-like desert insects) did not defend its nest, which had been crushed by a wheel of the lead wagon.

Omens are interpreted by haruspexes, who read signs in bosk blood, the livers and entrails of sleen, slaves, and other animals, as well as the wind, the grass, the flights of birds, and other natural phenomenon.

In addition, haruspexes provide amulets, talismans, potions, etc to members of the Camp
They also provide minor medical treatment to the women and slaves of the Wagon People.

-- Nomads of Gor, pg 28

"I heard a haruspex singing between the wagons; for a piece of meat he would read the wind and the grass; for a cup of wine the stars and the flight of birds; for a fat bellied dinner the liver of a sleen or slave."
From Nomads of Gor, p. 27

Callista, Haruspex of Kassar

I am Callista, a proud Free Woman of the Haruspex Clan of The Kassar Wagon People. Many years ago I fell for a handsome Traveller, Hussan of Port Kar, who took me as his woman. Through all the happy years of travel, adventure, and pampered city life, I never lost my longing for the wagons and the wide open freedom of the plains. Upon the death of Hussan, I lost no time in returning home. Many things had changed, but I was happy to see that the spirit, pride, humor, and fierceness of the Wagon People had remained true

I'm something of a healer, though a primitive one. I use a lot of herbs, roots and powders found in and around Kassar territory, including gut sutures, bone needles, and various dried and powdered parts of the all important bosk. My healing methods are very unusual, comprised mainly of traditional medicine interspersed with the use of various talismans and (to the layman) indecipherable words and symbols

If you find the Kassar camp on a night when the moons are full, you might find me dancing to the spirit of the bosk, please don't interrupt, as interaction with the spirit of the bosk is crucial, and interrupting that communication could cause dire consequences

My days are mainly spent making amulets, tying strings, patching up the occasional injured or sick Kassar, and thinking of new and inventive ways to creep out my nemesis Parthia and the slaves of camp, while trying to convince the Men of Kassar that I'm sweet, innocent, and beyond reproach ~LOL~

It's a good, simple life, and although I sometimes miss Hussan, I am happy
